15 Useful Features that you don’t know about WordPress

WordPress is one of the most popular content management system (CMS) and used by over 60 million websites as per Wikipedia, and many popular sites such as TechCrunch, Pulse by Target, The Walt Disney Company, and Vogue are running on WordPress. But, there are still many things are useful features that we don’t know exist in WordPress. I have seen some persons install third-party plugins to get a feature which already available in WordPress. So, I am here to share some fantastic features which abandon you to install any plugins and save your site server space.

Below are 15 Features inside of WordPress that you may not be already there the whole time.

1). Setup A Privacy Policy Page

If you are planning to run Ads or join different affiliate programs to make from your blog, then you will surely need a privacy policy page on your blog. There are many privacy policy plugins available in the market, but WordPress already provided a privacy policy page creation option.

Just Go to Setting à Privacy, and if you have already created a privacy policy page, then you can also select the same. Otherwise, click on Create New Page to create a policy page for your blog.

2). Schedule WordPress Posts:

 Are you being tired of writing daily and don’t have to promote your blog? Then, the scheduling option will give you a helping hand to reduce your work burden. You can easily schedule your posts for a day, week, and even for a month. But, I would suggest you go with a week option.

To Schedule your post, check your publish option below the visibility option on your right hand of your post editing field. And click on immediately and select the desired date you want to publish your post.

3). Distraction Free Mode

 If you are one of those who write their posts on WordPress and want a clean interface for writing, then you can easily select the full-screen mode, or we say distraction free mode.

In WordPress Classic Editor, click on a button, and you will get the clutter free full screen to write your next popular post. Check the above image for the same.

If you are using Gutenberg Editor, then click on three dots option available on the upper right just beside the publish button and, after a click on full-screen mode option and it will enable full – screen mode for you. Check the above image for the same.

4).Screen Options

The Screen options feature will allow you to select or deselect the options that you want in your blog post.

The WordPress developers added the screen option just above your post editor in the classic editor. Just follow the above image.

If you are using Gutenberg editor, then you can find these options under show more tool & options. Just follow the above image.

5).Use Shortcodes

WordPress also various Shortcodes which allow you to embed audio, gallery, playlist, video, caption & even playlist. You can get them through from here

6).Keyboard Shortcuts

Do you know you can make your life easier through WordPress keyboard shortcuts? You can easily find the keyboard shortcuts option in your Classic editor post editor.

7).Sticky Posts

You can also highlight one of your posts at the top of the blog to get more attention to it.

To make a post a sticky, go to All Posts àQuick Edit and you will find “make this post sticky” option there.

8).Permalink Structure

WordPress offers an ability to create a custom URL structure for your permalinks and archives. It provides various permalink structures such as plain, day & name, month & name, numeric, post name, and you can even create a custom structure for your permalinks if you want.

But, I would recommend you to use Post Name Permalink structure for your blog as it also helps you to get better ranking in search engines.  

Go To Setting –à Permalinks and select the desired permalink you want.

9). Quick Edit Posts

Do you know? You can even edit the title, slug, date, categories and also allow or disallow both pings & comments without opening your posts.

Go to All Posts and click on quick edit in any of your posts that you want to edit.

10).Auto Embed Certain Type of Content

A Year ago, we had to use some premium plugins to embed YouTube video or tweets in our post, but now, we don’t have to use them again.

To automatically embed something like a tweet, YouTube video, or even a video, all you have to copy the link and past in your post. Just like we did.

For Example, The above tweet is not a photo but is the URL of a tweet which I copied and pasted in the post. The Auto embeds feature of WordPress will do the process, and you will see the embedded the result like the above.

11).Import Data

If you are planning to your blog from a different platform to a self-hosted WordPress site, then you can easily import all the stuff such as posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, tags from a WordPress export file.

Go To Tools — >> Import and you will find the list of options like the one you see in the above image.

12). Assign Roles to Site Users

You can assign a different role to your site users by creating their profile according to a skill such as an editor, author, contributor, and administrator.

To Add a New User, Go to All Users àAdd New and Fill the username, email, first & last name, password & assign the role you want like you see in the above image.

13). Discourage Search Engines

While creating a blog or even business website we don’t to submit under construction site to Google, so WordPress makes the process easy for us by giving an option to disallow the search engine from access our site.

To enable this feature, go to Settings àReading à Search Engine Visibility and tick mark the option to discourage search engine from indexing your site.

14). Select Your Avatar

You can select your Avatar to display a generic logo or a generated one based on their email address. And you can choose your Avatar from the following

•    Mystery Person

•    Gravatar Logo

•    Retro

•    Wavatar

•    Identicon

•    Blank

•    MonsterID

Just Go To Setting à Discussion and select your Avatar.

I would suggest you go with Gravatar Logo, to create Gravatar, go to Gravatar Website and create your account with the email you want.

15). Get Email Whenever You Get a Comment

You can enable email notification for the comment whenever you get a comment on your blog. To enable this feature, go to Setting à Discussion àEmail Me Whenever a comment is held for moderation.
